Meta Unveils Sweeping WhatsApp Monetization Features, Set for Global Rollout
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has officially announced a significant expansion of its monetization strategy for the world's most popular messaging app.

After years of careful deliberation and gradual integration of business tools, WhatsApp is now set to roll out a suite of new features globally, primarily focused on its "Updates" tab (which includes Status and Channels), marking a pivotal moment in the platform's evolution.
This strategic move aims to unlock new revenue streams for Meta while maintaining WhatsApp's core commitment to user privacy in personal chats. The new monetization features, which are already being introduced in phases, are designed to empower creators, businesses, and organizations to grow their reach and generate income directly within the app.
Key Monetization Features Being Rolled Out:
- Ads in Status: Similar to Instagram Stories, businesses can now place targeted advertisements within WhatsApp Status updates. These full-screen ads offer an interactive way for users to discover new products or services and can prompt direct engagement, allowing users to initiate a chat with the advertiser. Meta emphasizes that ad targeting will be based on non-sensitive data such as country, city, language, and interactions within the Updates tab, ensuring that personal messages and phone numbers are not used for targeting.
- Channel Subscriptions: Channel owners – ranging from influencers and news outlets to sports clubs and businesses – can now offer exclusive content to their subscribers for a monthly fee. This provides a direct revenue stream for creators and organizations, allowing them to build sustainable communities around their content. While Meta won't take a cut initially, a 10% commission is planned for the future.
- Promoted Channels: To enhance discoverability, WhatsApp will allow Channel administrators to pay to promote their channels. These promoted channels will appear as recommendations to users based on their interests when Browse the Channels directory, offering a significant boost in visibility and subscriber acquisition.
A Carefully Calculated Shift:
For over a decade, WhatsApp has been celebrated for its ad-free experience in private messaging. Meta's approach to monetization reflects a conscious effort to respect this privacy-first ethos. The new features are exclusively confined to the "Updates" tab, ensuring that personal chats, group messages, and calls remain end-to-end encrypted and free from advertising.
"We've explored for years how to support businesses on WhatsApp in ways that don't interfere with private messaging. We believe the Updates tab is the right space to do this," a Meta spokesperson stated.
With over 1.5 billion daily active users engaging with the "Updates" tab, Meta sees a tremendous opportunity to provide valuable tools for businesses and creators while tapping into a massive, highly engaged audience. This move is also seen as a strategic step to diversify Meta's overall revenue, which has traditionally been heavily reliant on advertising from Facebook and Instagram.
Impact and Outlook:
The global rollout of these monetization features is expected to be gradual over the coming months. Industry analysts are already predicting a significant boost to WhatsApp's revenue, potentially closing the gap with Meta's other ad-driven platforms. For businesses, especially in high-growth markets like Nigeria (which boasts over 51 million WhatsApp users), these new tools offer unprecedented avenues for direct customer engagement and marketing.
While privacy advocates are closely monitoring the implementation, Meta has consistently reaffirmed its commitment to not selling or sharing user phone numbers with advertisers and to never using personal message content for ad targeting. The success of this new monetization chapter will ultimately hinge on Meta's ability to maintain user trust while proving the value of these new features for businesses and creators worldwide.
