Umahi was born in Uburu, Ebonyi State, Nigeria, in 1963. He is a civil engineer by profession. He entered politics in 2011 when he was elected Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). In 2015, he was elected Governor of Ebonyi State.
During his time as Governor, Umahi made some progress in developing the state. He built roads, schools, and hospitals.He also attracted some foreign investment to the state.
However, he was also accused of corruption, nepotism, and human rights abuses.
In 2022, Umahi defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This move was widely seen as a political calculation to boost his chances of becoming President of Nigeria in 2023. However, Umahi’s defection was met with strong criticism from many people in Ebonyi State.
In March 2022, a Federal High Court in Abuja sacked Umahi and his deputy, Eric Kelechi Igwe, from office for defecting to the APC. However, Umahi appealed the court’s decision and was allowed to remain in office pending the outcome of the appeal.
In August 2023, Umahi was appointed as the Minister of Works by President Bola Tinubu. This appointment was also met with criticism from many people in Ebonyi State, who accused Umahi of abandoning the state to pursue his own personal political ambitions.
